Strategy without experience is just expensive guessing

Why most marketing strategy fails before the first ad runs – and what we do about it.

The challenge

Here's how most marketing strategies get made. An agency wins the account. There's a kickoff call. Someone requests access to the analytics, pulls a competitor report, reads the brand deck, and three weeks later presents a strategy – clean slides, confident projections, a media plan.

Every input in that deck is second-hand. The analytics describe what customers did, not why they gave up. The competitor scan describes what rivals publish, not what their buyers experience. The brand deck describes the company the way it sees itself. And through all of it, one thing never happened: nobody on the team tried to be the customer.

Nobody filled out the enquiry form and counted the hours until someone called back. Nobody sat through the sign-up flow and hit the confusing step. Nobody bought the product and experienced the onboarding. The strategy was built on assumptions about a person nobody in the room had ever been.

This is why strategies that look smart in the boardroom test poorly in the market. It isn't a lack of intelligence or effort. It's a missing input – the only input that can't be pulled from a dashboard.

What we do instead

We put real people at the centre.

This is the commitment every MontPier engagement begins with: the day a client hires us, we become their customer. We'll visit the website and map every error and dead end. We'll sign up and count the unnecessary clicks. We'll submit an enquiry and time the response. We'll go through onboarding and screenshot the odd moments. Where possible, we'll buy what they sell – using a client promo code – or get as close to buying as B2B allows.

What comes out is not an opinion. It's a friction map, a time-to-value analysis, and a prioritized list of fixes – the documented reasons a business loses customers, gathered before a single ad rupee or dirham is spent.

Only then do we talk strategy. And the strategy is different, because it starts from a different place: not "what should we say to the market?" but "what did we just experience, and what would have made us buy?"

Why this works

Real experience changes the strategy.

When we grew Rau's IAS to 10 million leads over seven years, the breakthrough wasn't a clever ad – it was fixing the leaky journey between a student's first flicker of interest and an admission. When Storeus grew 6x in nine months, it wasn't because a newcomer out-spent the giants; it's because we out-experienced them, repairing email, SEO, payments and trust before scaling paid. When Tall Bricks closed seven properties at AED 1.6 million and above, it was because we treated qualification – not lead volume – as the product.

Different industries, same pattern: the growth was unlocked by understanding the customer's real journey – the ads simply amplified a journey that finally worked.

Your customers live the truth about your business every single day. Most marketing ignores that truth because gathering it is inconvenient. We think it's the only honest place to start.

The bottom line

Guessing is expensive. Experience is cheaper. We start there.

From first conversation to working together, we put experience at the centre of every strategy we build.
